Dark Circles & Tired Eyes – Causes and Effective Care

Reducing Dark Circles—Why the Eye Area Is So Sensitive to Stress

Dark circles under the eyes are among the skin concerns that come up most frequently in my consultations—and at the same time, they are among the most underestimated. Many people automatically attribute them to a lack of sleep, but in reality, the cause is almost always more complex. Anyone who wants to reduce dark circles should therefore first understand how they develop in the first place—and why the skin around the eyes reacts so differently from the rest of the facial skin.

At only about 0.5 millimeters thick, the skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the entire body. It has significantly fewer sebaceous glands and a weaker skin barrier, which not only makes it visibly more sensitive but also gives it a more translucent appearance. It is precisely this structural difference that explains why fatigue, fluid retention, or reduced microcirculation become apparent here so quickly. What would barely be noticeable on the cheeks becomes a clearly visible shadow under the eyes.

On top of that, not all dark circles are the same. Bluish shadows are usually caused by blood vessels showing through due to slowed blood flow. Brownish discoloration tends to indicate increased pigmentation, such as from sun exposure or genetic predisposition. And sometimes they’re simply shadows caused by a slight loss of volume under the eye. Each type responds differently to skincare—and that’s exactly why a well-thought-out, personalized approach is needed, rather than a single “miracle cream.”

Just as important as understanding the causes is the realization that dark circles rarely disappear overnight. They are the result of a combination of lifestyle, genetics, and skin condition—and therefore require time, a consistent routine, and targeted active ingredients. The following sections will discuss how to reduce dark circles—starting with the basics of sleep and blood circulation and moving on to the right skincare routine.

Katjana Sür – Eye Care with Experience and a Delicate Touch

I’m Katjana Sür, founder of KS Beauty, and I’ve been working with high-performance skincare products for over 20 years. The eye area has always been a particular focus for me—it’s more sensitive, shows signs of stress more quickly, and is less forgiving of mistakes. That’s exactly why I always recommend skincare products that are gently formulated yet specifically effective.

Restful sleep—the underrated foundation in the fight against tired eyes

Sleep is the most common association when it comes to dark circles under the eyes—and for good reason—but the connection is more complex than is often assumed. During a night’s rest, lymphatic flow actively works to drain fluid from the eye area. If this restorative phase is missing or is disrupted, lymphatic fluid accumulates, microcirculation slows down, and the skin appears puffy, pale, and tired in the morning. Sleep quality is more important than the sheer number of hours: Someone who sleeps deeply for seven hours benefits significantly more than someone who lies restlessly in bed for nine hours.

To ensure that sleep actually relieves strain on the eye area, there are a few specific adjustments you can make:

  • Screen-free time before bed: at least 30 minutes without a smartphone, since blue light delays the onset of sleep
  • A cool, dark bedroom: ideal room temperature between 16 and 18 degrees
  • Elevated head position: a slightly raised pillow facilitates lymphatic drainage at night
  • A regular sleep schedule: the same bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends
  • Reduced alcohol and salt intake in the evening: both contribute to water retention

Sleep alone will rarely completely eliminate dark circles under the eyes, but it lays the foundation on which any further measures can build.

Targeted Stimulation of Blood Flow—Why Moving the Eye Area Makes All the Difference

While sleep is a passive recovery process, microcirculation around the eyes can also be actively stimulated—and this is precisely one of the most effective ways to reduce dark circles. When blood flow slows down, oxygen-deprived, dark blood shows through the already thin skin more clearly, creating the typical bluish-purple shadow. If, on the other hand, blood flow is gently stimulated, the appearance often changes visibly after just a few minutes.

Cool stimuli are particularly effective: Cold causes the tiny blood vessels to contract briefly, after which blood flow through them improves. It is precisely this principle that makes morning treatments with chilled tools so effective. Gentle massage movements using the fingertips or a special massage tool also support lymphatic flow and help drain fluid buildup more quickly. The key is using the correct technique: The motion should always move from the inner corner of the eye outward, using minimal pressure, as the skin in this area is extremely sensitive.

Just two to three minutes in the morning are enough to produce a noticeable refreshing effect. When used over several weeks, blood circulation gradually stabilizes—and your eyes look more alert, even on days when you haven’t gotten much sleep.

The Right Eye Care Routine—Active Ingredients the Eye Area Really Needs

Sleep and blood circulation lay the foundation—the right skincare builds on that and ensures that dark circles are visibly reduced over the long term. Unlike the rest of the facial skin, the eye area requires not so much high-performance active ingredients in high concentrations as a delicate balance of hydration, soothing, and targeted support for the skin’s structure. Textures should be light, but they should provide noticeable care without placing additional strain on the sensitive skin.

The following active ingredients have proven particularly effective in daily eye care:

  • Hyaluronic acid: visually plumps up fine lines and moisturizes thin skin
  • Niacinamide: helps promote a more even skin tone and strengthens the skin barrier
  • Antioxidants such as vitamin E and CoQ10: protect sensitive skin from environmental stress
  • Allantoin and panthenol: soothe irritation and promote regeneration
  • Plant extracts such as aloe vera or cucumber: have a cooling effect and gently reduce swelling

When applying the product, follow this rule: in the morning, use a light, fresh texture to give your eyes a wide-awake look; in the evening, use a richer formula that helps the skin regenerate overnight. Always apply the product with your ring finger, as it exerts the least pressure—and never apply it directly to the lash line, but rather to the orbital bone.
